Facts to Know if Paddle Boarding on a Lake or the Ocean

 When we step back to comparing paddle boarding on a lake or still water versus paddle boarding on the ocean, we would strongly suggest you take into consider the 5 factors we outline below.  While this is not a comprehensive list, common sense always should guide you, and as with any water sport, safety should be the first, second, and third considerations.

Is an Inflatable Standup Paddle Board (SUP) Viable to Use on the Ocean?

The short answer to this question is absolutely, yes, of course.  But there are factors that go into this answer and that should be considered.  First, don’t buy a flimsy standup paddle board from a non-reputable seller.  Buy a stand up paddle board from a top seller. Do your due diligence when you make your choice of stand up paddle boards and make sure that the board is set to be:

  • Stable

  • Durable

  • Built for/Approved for Ocean Paddle Boarding

What Factors Should I Consider Using My SUP on the Ocean?

Make sure you check the conditions of the ocean, have experience in paddle boarding, practice safety simulations, and if you are not a strong swimmer, know the inherent risks in any water activity that is done on the ocean, with tide changes and inherent unpredictability.  Ensure the board has features like an ankle leash and that you have a life jacket, wetsuit, and even a loud whistle or way to call for help.  Use common sense and stay out of choppy water or waves or areas where there are swimmers if you are not an experienced paddle boarder who has been in the ocean before.

What are some of the the "ins and outs" of lake paddle boarding?

Interestingly and somewhat surprisingly, there are often local and state regulations that are  in place and must be followed when paddle boarding in lakes or other bodies of water.   These often don’t apply in the ocean; where the risk may be more extreme.  But the risk on lakes is also present and should be considered when getting ready to do some lake paddle boarding, which can be one of the most delightful water sport experiences you will have for some time to come.  The sport is exploding in popularity for a reason, and lake paddle boarding is at the center of this burst in popularity.

What Factors Should I Consider Using My SUP on a Lake?

Before you get on the lake with your stand up paddle board, note the following:

  • Age requirements and types of paddle boards or equipment that may be required based upon age;
  • Whether a PFD (flotation device) is required, and what type of device meets regulations
  • Is a sound producing device (to call for help) required?
  • Whether there are areas designated for SUPs, to avoid conflicts with swimmers, boats, or other hazards

On a Lake or on the Ocean: Using an SUP Means Using Common Sense

Whether you are using your SUP on a lake, the ocean, or in a pool, use common sense.  Know your surroundings, and do not get drunk and get on a paddle board.  Don’t be irresponsible, because stand up paddle boarding is one of the most enjoyable on-the-water types of fun (and exercise) you can enjoy.

Adding unnecessary risk can ruin it for you and your friends or family and being responsible means you can enjoy the SUP experience over and over again.  The goal is to have fun, not create unneeded risk and danger.
